THIS IS A MUST WATCH

Clara Cannucciari (née Bonfanti; August 18, 1915 – November 29, 2013) was the host of the web series Great Depression Cooking with Clara and author of the book Clara’s Kitchen.

Born in Melrose Park, Illinois on August 18, 1915, she went on to live through America’s Great Depression. During these difficult times, her freshly emigrated Sicilian American parents (Giuseppe and Giuseppina Bonfanti) were hit especially hard by America’s economic woes. Clara’s mother found inventive ways to stretch the family’s meals and they emerged from the Depression safe and healthy.

In 2007, her grandson Christopher Cannucciari began filming Clara preparing her mother’s Depression meals and assembled the footage into the YouTube series Great Depression Cooking with Clara. She retired shortly after her 96th birthday and her last video was posted on November 10, 2013 (Twice Baked Potato).

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the 1930s. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; however, in most countries it started in 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s. I am so enjoying Claras Kitchen. Just sad at her passing . I wanther book. I grew up enjoying my familys Italian heritage cooking. Many of those recipe s were born out of what there could grow, raise or make from scratch.I still cook a lot like that. I cherish the OLD way…..never let that history die….thank you for your filming her.

  5. Thanks for sharing Clara with us. Well done. I’d love to see the rest of her episodes.. Please let me know where to find them. Kerry

  6. My mother used to make me Hot Peppers and eggs on an Italian roll. I make them myself, but they never taste like my mothers. Clara was right, it was oily!
