“The Christmas Song”  was written in 1945 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa’s on his way
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And ev’rymother’s child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although its been said many times,
Many ways: “Merry Christmas to you”

When I was growing up I just couldn’t get enough of this song when my favorite time of the year… Christmas Time came along. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized that one of my favorite singers, Mel Torme as actually the one that had written this song.

And interestingly enough it was Natalie’s dad that was the one that really put his name on this song. Nat King Cole another of my favorites has yet to be out done with regard to his rendition of this song. I can never get enough and now with Andrea and Natalie on this recording I just have more to enjoy.

According to Mel Tormé, the song was written during a blistering hot summer. In an effort to “stay cool by thinking cool”, the most-performed Christmas song was born.

“I saw a spiral pad on his (Wells’) piano with four lines written in pencil”, Tormé recalled. “They started, ‘Chestnuts roasting…, Jack Frost nipping…, Yuletide carols…, Folks dressed up like Eskimos.’

Bob didn’t think he was writing a song lyric. He said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Forty minutes later that song was written.
